Ipods and Memories....

Well, I had good intentions of posting some super cute pictures of Quinn's most recent wipe-out (the wipe-out was two days ago, but I got good snap shots of him lying in bed sleeping last night) - but due to extreme laziness right now I just don't have it in me to upload them! So...instead I'll ramble about my thoughts while running my 4 miles on the treadmill tonight. Funny how 4 miles on a treadmill seem like 10. It was horrible - the fact that it was 83 degrees in the garage in December probably didn't help much!

Anyway, I don't usually listen to my Ipod when I run. I have some sort of OC thing about always fidgeting with it and I finally, awhile back, just gave it up. It was more of a distraction than a motivator. However, tonight while putting the boys to bed I laid there thinking..."Good grief, do I really have to run tonight?!" Yes, I did. I was planning to this morning after dropping Konnor off at school and the other two with Sanjog -but unfortunate circumstances on Sanjog's end enabled me to have the boys for most of this morning and then this afternoon and evening. I'm not complaining:)
Back to my thoughts to myself....yes, I had to get up and run on the treadmill. Yippee. The only motivator I could come up with was my Ipod for some reason....not just my Ipod, but when I started running I felt the need to turn the volume up as high as it could go for whatever reason.

Oddly enough, the first mile I ever run when running seems to be the most difficult for me. Once I hit the mile marker I'm good to go - but getting into it and having my mind finally believe that "Oh, this is fun!" takes at least a good mile. At about .5 miles - my playlist hit "Ditty" by Paperboy. Although NOT a running song, I had to listen. That song brings back some pretty funny memories. Back in high school - early high school - probably freshman year I guess - my friend Amanda used to date this guy Greg and I was "dating" my good friend CJ. (For those of you who knew me then, you'll laugh when you see the quotations around "dating!"). Anyhow, so, I wasn't even old enough to drive at the time I don't think. Nope. I wasn't. Greg was a Junior - the rest of us were freshman. He drove a 2 door baby blue Grand Am. We would travel the country roads for hours on end - and listen to "Ditty" over, and over, and over. Now - for those of you who didn't know me then - you're probably thinking a little too far into this! We were purely innocent - in fact, it would sound as though we were druggies doing you know what out there on the country roads but we were 100% purely innocent. No lie. I have to laugh every time I hear that song - and I can assure you that CJ and the other two would be right there laughing with me! CJ is happily married today :)

On to about mile 2.8 - I'm dying. For what reason, I have no idea. Not sure if I was going too fast, or just bored, too hot in the garage? I have not a clue, but I was sweating so badly my face stung! I'm searching fast through my list of songs about ready to throw the Ipod and I see "Glory Days" by Bruce Springstein. PLAY. PLAY NOW!!! Again, NOT a running song (I am so old school, I do not even have my songs sorted into playlists..in fact, I have to scroll past The Wiggles Monkey Dance, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Roll On 18 Wheeler, Jesus Loves me, etc....but I sort of like it - makes me think of the kiddos and I smile. Ok, got off track again....NOT a running song but I have to listen to it. Glory Days is full of memories.....

In July of 1997 my cousin Kelli and I were able to attend the World Scholar Athlete Games in Rhode Island. We both were nominated to go to play volleyball. It was an 11 day adventure for us - 17 year old Iowans - so far away from home on our OWN! Ha. An awesome experience. While there, I believe they held a dance for us for entertainment - well, Kelli and I were total wallflowers (you know, we had serious boyfriends back home) and me, being the moron I am - totally ran into this dark, handsome, California man! We start chatting - he's got an adorable accent, a surfer dude, spoiled rotten attitude - and I'm thinking...."Hmmmm!" Anyway, nothing came of it other than innocent flirting - (whatever flirting consisted of back in the day!) and he would come to watch us play volleyball, I would go watch him play basketball. I never actually saw him before we left - but we ended up running into him at the airport. I so wish I wasn't lazy right now or I'd go dig up the photo of us in the airport! It was a dandy! Anyway - we exchanged info and were on our way. Fast forward about 6 months, brave little me decides to get in touch with him. His phone number no longer worked - so I, being quite ballsy, gathered some of my senior pictures, wrote him a little note, and mailed it away! Can you imagine? These were the days that we really didn't have internet!!! Weird. Anyway, much to my surprise he CALLED me! And so the story goes...we stayed in touch for years.
When I was living in Iowa City - going through an early life crisis - we talked on the phone all the time. Wrote emails back and forth speaking of how we were going to get married someday, and how we were "destined" to be together! Ha ha. Finally, he convinced me to come visit him. He was, at the time, attending the University of California San Diego - pre-med. Sign me up:) Rather than just visiting him though, I decided to pack it up and move to California. Got a live-in nanny job - but went to visit him first. I flew into LAX, never been to California before, had no clue what I was doing - but this was the man I was destined for?! No big deal! He cruised up to the terminal in his brand new Ford Mustang (that, b/c he was nervous to come and get me, he got into a fender bender with a BMW on the way!) - loaded me up and away we went. Cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway from LA to San Diego. I was in heaven. Literally. I fell in love with California from the minute I stepped foot out of that terminal.

We're cruising away - he's acting all cool, I'm in another world wondering " what the heck am I doing?!" He looks at me and says "I've got a song for you girl!" (I know, ha ha). Glory Days. It was amazing! Nothing like being a little Iowa girl, moving to Cali in her suitcase, spending a week with a friend she met in Rhode Island months before - cruising down the PCH at dusk - blaring Glory Days. Ohhhhh....the memories. Rami - now officially a doctor- is also - newly, and happily married.
So, from mile 2.8 - I'm grinning ear to ear - dreaming that the white walls are sandy beaches and clear blue waters - and before I knew it 4 miles were complete. I think this is my cue to seriously attempt the full marathon in San Diego in June, that is, if I survive the half in January.
Those songs make me smile every time I hear them. I'm creating a playlist for the 1/2 marathon and they will be sure to be included.
